Tibetan Medicine during Disintegration

  After the breakup of the Tibetan empire in the late 9th century, although there were servral nations, the most influential one should be Guge Kingdom in western tibet in 10th century, which had a splendid civilization about 700 years.
In this period, there was a famous scholar on Tibetan medicine, Renqin Sangbo, whose translation of some important works of Ayurveda had greatly impacted the later Tibetan medicine.
About 12-13 century, the Four Medical Tantras was exhumed after several centuries, recensed and illustrated by gYu-thog gSra-ma Yon-tan mGon-po and his partner, it become the most important work on Tibetan medicine.

Tibetan medicine developped in Guge kingdom
Guge was an ancient kingdom in Western Tibet. King Ye sHes-vod sent 27 young men to learn translation in India, rin-chen-bzang-po was the most famous one who make outstanding contributions to Tibetan medicine. His translation of Vagabhata's Yan-Lag bRgyad-pvi sNying-bo bSdus-Pa had greatly promoted the development of Tibetan medicine. The school he built in Monastery Mtho-lding dGon-Pa in Ali was the earlist medical school after the medical school built by gYu-thog rNying-ma Yon-tan mGon-po in 8th century. The main course in the school is Yan-Lag bRgyad-Pvi sNying-bo bSdus-pa, it is the precedent of the medical education in the monasteries.

gRgs-pa mNgon-shes
Famous doctor in Tibet during 1012-1090, ordained as a monk in his childhood.He exhumed a lot of termas (the sutras which were imbeded in caves, beam-column or stupas, then be exhumed by the later generations after hundreds of years ), especially his discovery of Four Medical Tantras in Samye Monastery in 1038 make this magnum opus reappear to the public.

mNyam-med dGas-po La-rgys
mNyam-med dGas-po La-rgys was born in 1079 AD, he was very talented in learning medicine and famous for devoting all his life to life-saving. He suffered a lot by the death of his twin boys and wife, so he tonsured as a monk in Kadampa. He created Tibetan human anatomy, because his mother died from indigestion, he dissected the mother's body, and experimented for several times, finally he invented dgas-po-sman-nag, which has special treatment of the digestive system is still used today. His works were the famous books in 11th century.

gYu-tHog gSra-ma Yon-tan mGon-po
gYu-tHog gSra-ma Yon-tan mGon-po was born in 1126 in Tibet, he was the 13th descendant of gYu-thog rNying-ma Yon-tan mGon-po, he visited many countries for several times, such as Nepal, Sri Lanka and so on. Since having deeper understanding of Four Medical Tantras, he supplemented the content of the book, and died in his age of 77 in 1202 AD.
